Environment variables

Plain key/value pairs available to every step in a project.

Open a project's Environment tab, and add key/value pairs under Variables. Values are stored and displayed in plain text — the list shows the actual value next to each key.

Every variable in a project is exported as a shell environment variable to every step of every workflow in that project. There's no way to scope a variable to just one workflow or one step. On a shared project, owners, admins and members can see variables, and only owners and admins can change them.

Where the step runsRead a variable named BUILDER
This computer, Command Prompt%BUILDER%
This computer, PowerShell$env:BUILDER
This computer, Git Bash$BUILDER
A server$BUILDER

Names can use letters, numbers and _, and can't start with a number. The copy button next to a variable copies its value.

For anything sensitive — API keys, passwords, tokens — use Secrets instead.
